PROF. OLUKUNLE IYANDA, FNIM, EMERGES 21ST PRESIDENT AND CHAIRMAN OF COUNCIL

Professor Olukunle Iyanda, FNIM, a renowned university don and professor of International Business Management and Marketing has emerged the 21st President and Chairman of Council of the Nigerian Institute of Management. Prof. Iyanda, who will pilot the affairs for the next two years (2017 – 2019), was also a former Director-General of the Institute and former Rector of The Polytechnic, Ibadan. He was the Deputy President of the Institute from 2015 to 2017.
Also elected were Mrs. Pat Anabor, a seasoned university administrator and first female Registrar/Chief Executive of the Institute as Deputy President while Major Gen. Iyanda Muraina (retd.) became the National Treasurer.
The new President, Prof. Iyanda, who has been serving the Institute in various capacities for many years, holds a Bachelor of Science degree from the prestigious University of Lagos. He also went to the Graduate School of Business (now Stern School of Business) of the New York University, New York, USA where he studied for the Master of Business Administration degree and his Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) degree in International Business Management and Marketing. He has over forty years of professional and managerial experiences.

This erudite scholar of international repute who did not allow indigence to deter him from achieving his set academic goals distinguished himself all through his academic pursuit passing with top grades. He went through the prestigious University of Lagos as one of the pioneer students under the auspices of Esso (West Africa) Scholarship for outstanding performance graduating with second class (Upper Division) in Business Administration. Prof. Olukunle Iyanda was also a beneficiary of the NYU-Nigeria and the USAID scholarship project, which saw him through his master (M.Sc.) and doctorate (Ph.D) degrees. In the midst of his academic pursuit, he still found time to be actively involved in activism through students’ unionism and the then ruling political party in the Western region of Nigeria, the Action Group. On graduation from the University of Lagos, Prof. Iyanda who spent the greater part of his work life at the university, worked briefly with the Nigerian Tobacco Company as a Trainee Marketing Manager before he was invited back to the university in February 1966 as a Graduate Assistant in Business Administration. From 1968 when he was appointed Assistant Lecturer at the University, he worked and discharged his duties creditably in different capacities before reaching the pinnacle of his academic career with his appointment as a Professor of Business Administration at the University of Lagos in March 1984. Having served as the Director of the MBA programme and Acting Head of the Department of Business Administration, Prof. Iyanda was elected Dean of the Faculty of Business Administration in 1984 and held the position till 1987 when he accepted the invitation of the Oyo State Government to serve as the Rector of The Polytechnic, Ibadan in order to stabilise the institution which was then experiencing considerable unrest. Having served as Rector for three years, Prof Iyanda returned to his base at the University of Lagos in January 1991 and retired in March of the same year, after 35 years of meritorious service. At the University, Prof. Iyanda served as a member of the Senate and on several committees of either the Council or the Senate. He strengthened the town and gown relationship and attracted corporate sponsorship of several public service activities of the Faculty of Business Administration. In April 1991, Prof. Iyanda took up appointment as Director-General of the Nigerian Institute of Management (NIM), and raised the quality of training programmes, restored and strengthened the relationship with corporate members and increased the Institute’s public image through periodic public lectures from leading citizens and management practitioners such as Gen. Olusegun Obasanjo, Chief Olu Falae, Chief M. K. O. Abiola and Dr. (Engr.) Onyemelukwe. In November 1995, Prof Iyanda resigned from the NIM to accept his appointment by the Commonwealth Secretariat, London, as the Founding Dean of the Faculty of Management and Administration of Africa University, Mutare, Zimbabwe, where he established the Master of Business Administration Programme as well as the undergraduate programmes in Accounting, Business Administration, Public Administration, and Economics. In 2000, he moved his services to the University of Botswana serving as Head of Department of Marketing for three and a half years. On his return to Nigeria in December 2010, he took up appointment with Caleb University, Imota, Lagos where he has served as Dean of the College of Social and Management Sciences and currently as Dean of the College of Postgraduate Studies. A fellow of the Nigeria Institute of Management and National Marketing Association, Prof Iyanda who is a recipient of ICON of Marketing of the National Institute of Marketing of Nigeria and Distinguished Achievement Award, Oluyole Club, Lagos among other awards has edited four books and published several articles in learned journals both in Nigeria and internationally. Prof. Iyanda enjoys theatre, literary and debating, sports, and Nigerian indigenous music. In appreciation of his innumerable contributions to the growth of the Institute and management profession, he was elected the Deputy President of the Nigerian Institute of Management in 2015.

According to a statement signed by the Registrar/Chief Executive of the Institute, Mr Anthony Fadaka, the investiture of the new President and Chairman of Council which will be witnessed by members of the Institute, representatives of other professional bodies, government and corporate bodies will take place on Thursday, December 14, 2017 at MUSON Centre, Onikan, Lagos at 11am.
